Project Applicant: The National Trust

Total Project Costs; £930,000

ERDF/ESF AWARDED: £178,000

Project Aim

The project aimed to re-vitalise Wordsworth House – the main tourist attraction in Cockermouth, Cumbria. The aim is to attract more visitors to the property, increasing spend in the town and securing employment for staff at the property

Practicalities and Activities of the Project

The project has re-created William Wordsworth’s childhood home and created a more interactive, family focussed attraction by using reproduction contents and costumed staff to bring the house to life and communicate with visitors

Achievements

The house has only just re-opened to the public to widespread acclaim and international media coverage – from the Daily Mail to the New York Times. More staff are being taken on at present to cope with visitor demand.

Added value of the ERDF/ESF

ERDF funding for the capital improvements such as disabled access, a new visitor reception and new gardens has been essential to deliver the project.
